Kathleen M. Amato, 67, passed away Sunday, October 31, at her home in Otisco after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Warsaw, NY, the oldest of 11 children, Kathleen grew up on the family dairy farm in Western, NY. She studied nursing at Mercy School of Nursing, Canisius College, and Boston College, receiving her RN, BS in nursing and master's degree in medical/surgical nursing, respectively. Afterwards, she was an assistant professor teaching nursing at the SU School of Nursing before starting her family in 1973. Then she was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother, and substitute school nurse. For the last 17 years, Kathleen taught science and history at the BVM Academy in Syracuse, bringing her nursing experience to the classroom. She was an active member at BVM Church's Altar & Rosary Society and the Legion of Mary. She was an avid flower and vegetable gardener and well-known as a tremendous seamstress, creating her own clothes and braided rugs. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Wayne Amato; mother, Bernadine Campbell; five children, Siena (Chuck) Halligan, Stephen Amato, Alan Amato, Alicia Stanley (Chris) and Alexander Amato (Renee); nine grandchildren, Felicity, Bridget, Thomas, Philip, Peter and John Halligan, Isabel and Julia Stanley, and Concetta Amato; four sisters, Marge Argenio, Loretta Buczek, Mary Ann Ikbal and Jeanette Soroka; four brothers, Robert, Dick, Frank and Chris Campbell; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be Wednesday, November 3, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Butler-Badman Funeral Home, 4504 W. Seneca Turnpike, Syracuse, NY 13215. The Requiem Latin Mass will be Thursday, November 4, at 10 a.m. at Blessed Virgin Mary Mother of God Church, 450 Wilkinson Street, Syracuse, NY 13204. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the BVM Academy, 2656 Warners Road, Warners, NY 13164.
