Chas. E. Campbell Fatally Stricken Enroute To Work

Collapsing early Sunday evening while enroute to his work, Charles E. Campbell, 602 Sheridan street, died before medical aid could reach him.

Mr. Campbell, employed as area watchman for the J. L. Simmons Construction company of Decatur, was walking on highway 104 near Finley street when he collapsed. The Decatur company is engaged in building the new Passavant hospital.

The first to reach the stricken man was Earl L. Smith of Rushville, enroute to Jacksonville. Mr. Smith notified the Brohan Service Station and Drive-In, which in turn notified the local police. Sgt. Albert Spreen and Patrolman Charles Runkel responded. Dr. T.O. Hardesty was summoned and arrived at the scene.

Coroner Armin Fricks held an inquiry and found that death was due to natural causes.

Mr. Campbell was born in Christian county on Sept. 30, 1878. He was the son of the late Shadrick and Nancy Jane Orr Campbell. He was united in marriage with the former Laura [sic] Bell, who survives with the following children: Mrs. Letha Herrin, Mrs. Delia Watkins, Mrs. Mary Pate, all of Jacksonville. Mrs. Dorothy Carls and Mrs. Velma Brown, both of Bearsdstown, and Mrs. Erma Stiltz and Charles Campbell, both of Easton. There are ten grandchildren. Mr. Campbell was the last member of his immediate family.

He was a member of the local No. 253 Hod Carriers and Common Laborers union.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Williamson Funderal Home. Interment will be made in the Jacksonville East Cemetery. (The Daily Journal, 8 May 1951, p. 5, Jacksonville, Illinois)
