James D Campbell passed away at Hospice House after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. He spent his last few days surrounded by many of the friends & relatives who loved him.
Jim was born to Vonna May Fortner & Dale E Campbell. He graduated from Southeast High School. He received his undergraduate degree in Education from Central Missouri State University in 1955. He began what would be a long & dedicated career as an educator in Concordia, Missouri before moving his young family to the KC area. He began teaching in the KC MO School District in 1959, working there for the remainder of his career until he retired in 1994.
He received his Masters degree in administration & counseling in 1970 from UMKC. Jim spent the bulk of his career as an assistant principal at Northeast High School, where he got to know several generations of neighborhood families. He was a familiar face at many of the Northeast High sporting events as well as sponsoring other extra-curricular activities throughout the years. Jim also served as an officer in the AFT, the local teachers union. Jim was elected to serve as president of the KC MO Teachers Retirement Board in the 1980's & served in that capacity or as a member for over two decades, continuing to serve even after his retirement. His hard work in that capacity ensured that educatiors in one of the largest systems in Missouri would retire well rewarded.
Jim also spent many summers & long weekends delivering trucks for Hesse Corporation, cementing friendships with a small group of fellow educators in the process.
Jim had a great love of the outdoors which was instilled in his sons & daughter at an early age. Many weekends plus family vacations were spent camping in various state & National Parks throughout the US. Jim hiked the Grand Canyon several times & his love of the Southwest compelled him to purchase a second home in beautiful Sedona, AZ, where he permanently retired a few years ago.
Jim was also an avid sports fan, & imparted a love of baseball to his sons that dates back to attending K.C. A's games at old Municipal Stadium, & teaching them the fine art of score keeping.
Jim will be missed by his cardio-rehab pals both here & in Sedona, who spent many hours together in the gym and sharing coffee afterwards. Jim's great wit & sense of humor will be missed by all those who knew him. He was a hard working & principled man whose life was an example to others of a life well lived.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, & son Tim.
He is survived by his children: Steve w/wife Annette, daughters Carlie & Anna Campbell; Joe Campbell, w/his daughter, Hannah of KC; & Melinda Hancock w/husband Chuck Hancock, daughters Krista & Jordan of Benton, AR; granddaughter, Michaela Zamorra, daughter of Tim Campbell; brother, Jerry Campbell & S-in-L Kate Campbell of Seattle.
The funeral was at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church.
