A family of seven from which sudden death had taken the Father and three small children within the last fourteen months lost another member yesterday afternoon when a Ford car driven by W.P. Griffith, farmer of near Greer, struck and fatally injured six year old Kathleen Campbell on the Laurens Road about half a mile from the city limits.

According to Mr. Griffith, the child ran across the road directly in the path of his car. The front fender struck her and one wheel passed over her body before the machine could be brought to a stop, he said. She was rushed to the city hospital in an unconscious condition, and died a few minutes after admittance from internal injuries and a fractured skull.

Mr. Griffith went to the Sheriff's office with Deputy Edgar Moser, who investigated the accident, and was placed under technical arrest pending the outcome of an inquest to be held by Coroner John L. Parks Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock in the funeral parlors of the Jones-McAfee company, where the body was taken.

Mrs. George Campbell, mother of the child, brought her from their home at Gowensville yesterday afternoon to visit Will Blue, a relative who lives on the Laurens Road just outside the city limits. While the Mother was seated in the house, the little girl went out to play in the road with two other children. She elected to run across the highway just as Mr. Griffith's car approached.

The car was left in the position in which it was standing after striking the child until Coroner Parks and Mr. Moser arrived on the scene. Mr. Griffith accompanied the little girl to the hospital in another machine.

Just about a year ago, George Campbell, father of Kathleen, was stabbed to death with a knife at Gowansville. A few months later one of Kathleen's little sisters fell in a fire and was burned to death. Two months after this tragedy, another small sister upset a pot of boiling grease on her body, and died two days later. A third sister ran a nail in her foot, contracted lockjaw and died within 24 hours. Three weeks ago a brother of Kathleen's was shot and severely wounded.
