Enlisted in Mercer County, Pennsylvania into the 140th Pennsylvania Infantry/Cavalry ( have seen both referenced) on 4 September 1862. Private in Company B. Saw action with the regiment in such places as Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness and others.
Received an incised wound to the head and was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corp on 15 June 1864. He applied through the state of Kansas for a disability pension, which he was awarded $12 per month.
In Kansas he was a member of the J. M. Frank Post of the G.A.R.
