THELMA HENRIETTA (CALLOWAY) BAKER
(November 27, 1907 - January 11, 1995)
Thelma Henrietta (Calloway) Baker, 87, of Valliant, OK was born November 27, 1907 in Kaufman County, Texas.
Thelma Baker died on Wednesday, January 11, 1995 at McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Oklahoma.
She was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Valliant,OK, and she sang in the church choir.
Thelma was famous for her caramel pies and each time brought them to the Baker Reunion in Valliant, OK.
Maxine (Naylor) McCartney had been a long-time Music Teacher in the Valliant Area, and after retirement, she played the piano at the First Baptist Church. She and Thelma were good friends, and they were probably about the same age. Thelma always told Maxine that she wanted her to play the piano at her funeral. Maxine McCartney did get to play the piano at Thelma's funeral, but she, herself died soon afterward.
Thelma (Calloway) Baker married Oscar Hobson Baker on February 6, 1926. They were married for over fifty (50) years before his death January 28, 1981 (Valliant Cemetery). Oscar was born November 26, 1898 in Wills Point, Van Zandt County, Texas. They had two children who were Bettie Ruth (Baker) Harwell and Orva Lee (Sonny) Baker.
Survivors include her daughter; Bettie Ruth (Baker) Harwell of Valliant, OK; her son, Orva Lee "Sonny" Baker and wife Pat of Panama City, Florida; four (4) grandchildren and three (3) great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 13,1995 at 2:00 p. m. at the First Baptist Church, Valliant, OK, with Rev. Dell Glenn and Rev. James Evans officiating. Buriel was at Valliant Cemetery, Valliant, McCurtain County, OK, under the direction of Huckleberry Funeral Service of Valliant, Oklahoma.
