John Ewart Calley, Jr., 63, of Fryeburg ME, died March 15, 2001, during heart surgery at Maine Medical Center in Portland ME. He was born in Somerville MA on Jan. 25, 1938, the son of John Ewart Calley, Sr., and Mildred Moses Calley. He attended schools in Cambridge MA, Arlington MA, and graduated from Belmont (MA) High School, class of 1956. He was active in DeMoulay and Boy Scouting. He graduated from Franklin Technical Institute in Boston and from the Cambridge School of Radio Broadcasting. In 1957, he worked for a short time for the local radio station, WBNC, in Conway NH.
In 1964, he moved from Arlington to Fryeburg, and in 1967 he opened his store in Center Conway NH called John's TV, which now includes Valley Rentals. He ran a business booth for over 25 years at the Fryeburg Fair and in 1997 opened the Green Mountain Coffee Booth. He was past president of Fryeburg Kiwanis; a director of the local DARE program; active in the New Hampshire Federation of Independent Businesses; and a member of the New Hampshire Leadership Council.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judith Fournier Calley, of Fryeburg; son John Edwin Calley of Concord NH; daughter Janet and husband Brian Collins of Fryeburg; grand-children Brandon S. Calley of Concord, and Amanda and Aric Kiesman of Fryeburg; and his extended family, Robin French and Tommy Bailey, both of Concord.
