US pilot who flew for the RFC in World War I. He served in the Louisiana National Guard as a soldier in the Mexican border dispute of 1916, but was not allowed into the US Air Service for bureaucratic reasons. So he joined the British Royal Flying Corps, scoring eight kills before he himself was shot down over the French battlefield in the closing months of the war.
