LaVern C. Callear, 73, of RR #1, Athens, PA passed away Thursday July 11, 2002 at home following an extended illness.

Born July 3, 1929 in Athens, PA the son of Clinton and Florence Snyder Callear. LaVern attended Athens High School and played on the very first All Valley Football team. He also played with the Elmira Iroquois Chiefs in 1950 and with a record of 9-0 they took the N.Y. Sate Pro football league title. He served with the 11th Airborne Division of the U.S. Army at Ft. Campbell , KY. He worked for Sardone Construction company right after high school putting in the electrical poles for East Athens and Litchfield. He retired from the Athens Ingersoll Rand July 31, 1991 after 41 years. He also worked with his brother Donald as a carpenter and drove truck for many years for Stanley Grimley. He loved to fish and boat with his grandchildren, hunt and golf. He also loved gardening, flowers and his Cayuga Lake property.

He attended the Sayre Christian Church, was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose #1490 of Waverly, a life member of the Sayre Elks #1448, where he served on the board of directors, the committee to put in the new annex and helped with the Elks many projects such as the Hoop Shoot, their golf tournament, clambakes and distribution of surplus food. LaVern worked many years with Don Schrader on various youth activities.

He was predeceased by his parents and an infant daughter in Oct. of 1964.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis, at home, his daughters, Michelle Jenkins of Elmira, NY and Pamela Weed of Ulster, PA; his grandchildren; Danielle and Matthew Jenkins both of Elmira, NY and Kaitlin and Cody Weed of Ulster, PA. He is also survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law; Donald and Phylis Callear of Athens, PA, Jack and Barbara Callear of Sayre, PA; Charles Callear of Athens, PA; his sister, Herethel Campbell of Sayre, PA and his sister and brother-in-law; Ardena and Earl Bodine of Elmira, NY; a sister-in-law, Sandra Leidich of Salem, VA; two special friends, Dick and Lila Bowman of Whitehall, PA numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.


Family and friends may call Monday from 11:00-2:00p.m. at the Sayre of Christian Church, 427 South Keystone Ave., Sayre, PA.

A memorial service will follow at the Church at 2:00p.m. With Rev. James Donahoo officiating.

Burial will be in the Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens, PA.

The family will provide flowers and those who wish may kindly remember him through Guthrie Hospice, RR #1 Box 154, Towanda, PA 18848, the Sayre Christian Church, 427 South Keystone Ave., or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of the Lowery Funeral Home, Athens, PA.
