Willard Taylor "Bill" Calhoun, 92, of Parkersburg, passed away April 13, 2011 at his residence under the loving care of his family and Amedisys Hospice.
He was born Aug. 19, 1918 in Pullman, W.Va., a son of the late Eddmund and Byrda Mae Hall Calhoun.
"Bill" started working with the AT&T telephone company shortly after graduating from Pullman High School in 1936. He retired from the Bell Atlantic Telephone Company after 39 years of service, having served in the Berkeley Springs, Weston, Glenville, and Parkersburg offices. He served as President of the Glenville Rotary Club. He was an active member of Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge 3 in Parkersburg, where he achieved the highest rank awarded, the 33rd Degree, and also served as Ambassador- at-Large and Superintendent of the Masonic Temple. At the time of his passing, he was the oldest surviving 33rd Degree Mason in the Parkersburg Scottish Rite. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in New Orleans and the Pacific Theater. His military memoirs are on file at the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
"Bill" is survived by his wife of 71 years, Pauline Mills Calhoun; daughter, Patty Lassiter; son-in-law, Hal Lassiter, MD, all of Vienna; sister, Mary Leggett of Milton; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, "Bill" was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Calhoun.
The service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with Reverend Scott Sears officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery with full military rites by American Legion Post 15 and Masonic rites by Mt. Olivet Lodge 3. Visitation will be from noon-2 p.m. Sunday.
