We the jury summoned by M.Y. Givler, Coroner of Macon County, to hold an inquest over th dead body of Riley Calhoun agree from the evidence that the said Calhoun ws killed by a pistol ball discharged by Alonzo Banister at William Johnston but missing Johnston, poentrated the neck of said Calhoun, injured the spinal chord, causing death.
Decatur, May 27, 1872
Banister waived the preliminary examination, and was committed to jail to await the sitting of the grand jury. He is between 15 and 16 years old, which fact will prevent his suffering the extreme penalty of the law.
Calhoun, the murdered man, was buried today at 3 o'clock p.m., the funeral being attended by nearly all the colored people in town, for he was very much respected among them, being a very exemplary man and an active member of the colored church.
