William Ransom Calhoun son of John and Martha Davis Calhoun, descendant of Senator John C. Calhoun, was a West Point graduate. Aid to Gov. J. L. Manning and Secretay of Legation and acting Minister to France.

William entered confederate service as Capt. and later Lt. Col. of the 1st SC Artillery and was a veteran of the battles of Secessionville and 2nd Bull Run.

September 15, 1862 William was shot and killed in a duel with Lt. Col. Alfred Rhett also of the 1st SC Artillery.
