Mary Juanita Thorne Caldwell, 81, a retired teacher, died unexpectedly Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Stan Caldwell. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. EST Monday at Roselawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Tallahassee Community College Foundation, 444 Appleyard Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32304; the American Heart Association Florida Affiliate Inc., Big Bend Area, 1304 E. Sixth Ave., Tallahassee, FL 32303; or Big Bend Hospice, 1723 Mahan Center Blvd., Tallahassee, FL 32308. Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home, Riggins Road Chapel is handling arrangements.

A native of Iuka, Miss., she had lived in Tallahassee since 1959 and had been a part-time resident of Sky Valley, Ga., since 1978. She was a graduate of Florence State Teachers College, now known as the University of North Alabama, and received her master's degree from the University of Mississippi. She taught at the University of Arkansas and Florida State University and retired from Tallahassee Community College. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, the Theater Guild, the Garden Club of Sky Valley, Ga., and several bridge groups in Sky Valley. She was an Episcopalian.

son,
two daughters,
three grandchildren, and
niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Carey Thorne and Mary Etta Thorne, and a sister, Florine Fuller.
