A New York born journalist and lawyer, he founded with others in 1874 the Independent Order of Foresters (IOF) in Neward, N.J. He moved to Syracuse about 1891 and practiced law there until his death.

Colonel Alonzo B. Caldwell, whose death at the age of 78 had just taken place, was an interesting and unique character. He lived a large part of his active life in this community and ever was interested in political and public affairs. He was formerly prominent in journalism and as a member of the staff of Governor Seymour gained his military title.. He was active in the Old Corps of this city and became its historian. He was the organizer of the beneficiary order of Foresters and was its first supreme chief ranger and to his death retained prominent relations with the order. Colonel Caldwell was a lawyer as well as journalist. He was most companionable, genial and unselfish; a firm friend and valued associate. The members of the local Foresters court will direct the funeral services tomorrow afternoon in loving tribute to the founder of the order and to their departed brother and high officers of the order will attend.
