Miss Bertha V. Caldwell, 68, died of a heart attack Thursday evening, October 17, 1935, in the home of her brother, William F. Caldwell, near Hickory.
Miss Caldwell, a daughter of the late James and Nancy Smith Caldwell, was born July 2, 1867, on the farm on which she died. In 1904, she moved to Hickory, where she resided until the death of her mother in 1915. Later she spent a year in the West and for 10 years made her home in Washington, residing with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. David F. Caldwell in LeMoyne avenue. At their death, she made her home with her brother and his family.
Throughout her life, Miss Caldwell was actively engaged in church work. Early in life she united with the Hickory United Presbyterian church, was a charter member of the Women's Missionary society and an ardent worker in the Sabbath school, and associated with the Westland mission for years. While in Washington she was a member of the Second United Presbyterian church and was engaged in work in the Italian mission and the YWCA. The past eight years she had been secretary of the Washington County Sunday School Association.
Miss Caldwell is survived by her brother, William F. Caldwell of Hickory, and the following nieces and Nephews: Miss Mary Caldwell of Hickory, Mrs. Leroy Lee of Burgettstown, Robert T. Caldwell of Bedford county, and J. William Caldwell of Wheeling. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Hickory United Presbyterian church, conducted by the Rev. Clyde L. Myers. Burial was in the Mt. Pleasant cemetery, Hickory.
