Della Mae Burwell Caldwell, 84, of Norristown, formerly a 44-year resident of Narberth, passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2007 at the Lankenau Hospital in Lower Merion Township. She was the wife of the late George Caldwell.
Born January 23, 1923 in Strafford, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Frank Burwell and Mary Emma Mullen Burwell Shields. She attended school in the Chester County Schools and graduated from high school in Honey Brook, Pa. She later attended the national School of Nursing and was licensed as a Practical Nurse. She worked for over 30 years as a private duty nurse for the Ballingers Nursing Agency and the Chestnut Hill and Community Nursing Agencies.
Della was active in the community and served in various capacities, including as the Vice President of the Lower Merion School District Home & Schooling Association, a corresponding secretary of the Inter School Council, and on the Human Relations Committee. She was a board representative of the Main Line Red Cross. She was a member of the Green Circle, serving as the Chairman of the Board and demonstrator for the Green Circle Program in Montgomery, Chester and Delaware Counties. As a member of the Lankenau Hospital, she served as the service league president for two years and chaired the Lankenau Day at Wanamaker's, the Christmas Bazaar, and the Creative Craft Booth. She was a member of the Montgomery County Links and President of the Montgomery County Twigs, served on the board of the Philadelphia International Program for Youth and Social Workers, and served as a host family for students. She was also a board member of the Philadelphia Fellowship Commission.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church of Narberth, where she was President of the Women's Circle of the Church and a member of the church Council.
She is survived by her son, Walter Wilbur Brown, Sr., of Norristown, and two daughters, Sheila L. Morris of Houston, Texas and Catherine Esther Caldwell of King of Prussia; seven grandchildren, Stephen Morris, Nicole Morris, Monica Gillisphie, Seth Brown, Lauren Butler, Tyler Butler and Carly O'Doriso; a sister, Mardie Wing of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a brother, John Shields, Jr., of Glenside, Pa.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, May 25, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with all viewing from 10-11 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 196 Woodbine Avenue, Narberth. Interment will be at the Valley Forge Memorial Gardens, King of Prussia.
