Charles W. "Chuck" Cairns
Loving Husband, Father and Grandfather Charles W. "Chuck" Cairns, 73, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, November 27, 2011, following a brave battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his family at his Millcreek residence. Chuck was born May 24, 1938 in Buffalo, N.Y., a son of the late Thomas G. and Geneva Bauer Cairns. The family moved to Erie when Chuck was three years of age. He graduated from Academy High School in 1956. He then served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves and was called up to active duty during the Berlin Crisis. Chuck was employed at Loblaws for many years and retired from Quality Markets in 2000 after 44 years. He was a life member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was a member of the Deacon Board for many years, taught Sunday School, and played in the trumpet trio. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 50 years, Marilyn J. Grandy Cairns; two sons: Charles S. Cairns and his wife, Jing, of Grand Rapids, Mich. and Thomas E. Cairns and his wife, Cindy, of Boomer, N.C.; a daughter, Linda J. Cairns Albrewczynski and her husband, Jerome, of Erie. Chuck is also survived by a brother, Kenneth Cairns and his wife, Dorothy, of Deland, Fla. and a sister, Dorothy Cairns Young and her husband, Davis, of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren, a great-grandson, and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Burton Westlake Funeral Home, 3801 W. 26th Street (at Powell Ave.) on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. A funeral service will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Erie. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Bethel Christian School or Bethel Baptist Church, 1781 W. 38th Street, Erie, PA 16508. Flowers may be ordered and condolences sent to www.burtonfuneralhome.com.
