Mrs. Sarah Jane Cain Bates, aged ninety-one widow of Issac Bates, Civil War Veteran, died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Iva Shafer, on West North Street, at 4:30 o'clock Monday morning, following a long illness.

Her husband died thirty years ago.

Mrs. Bates was a member of the Free Methodist Church in Caldwell and spent the greater part of her life in and near Caldwell.

Survivors are her daughter, Mrs. Shafer, widow of Oliver George Shafer, former Noble County surveyor, with who she made her home, a son O.C. Cain, of the Sarahsville vicinity a granddaughter, Mary Ann Bates of Caldwell and two grandsons, Walker Cain, who is employed in defense work in New York City and Howard Cain, student in Princeton University in New Jersey.

Last rites were held at the home of Mrs. Shafer on West North street, Wednesday afternoon with Rev. Charles A. Mitchell, pastor of the Free Methodist Church, conducting the services, followed by burial in the Olive Cemetery, with Theo. T. Murphy funeral director in charge.
