Dies While Reading Paper

Joseph R. Cain Was Civil War Veteran and Pioneer Kansan
Joseph Riley Cain, 81, Civil war veteran and pioneer resident of Kansas died suddenly while reading a newspaper at his home, 1531 Van Buren street.

Mr. Cain was an old resident of Kansas and Topeka. He was born in Parksville (sic), Mo., October 9, 1843. He was married to Miss Sarah Jane McCain in Maryville, Mo., December 24, 1868, and together they moved to Kansas in 1872, settling near McLouth. In 1885 they moved near Valley Falls, and resided there until 1901 when they moved to Topeka. Mrs. Cain died in 1921.

Mr. Cain was a Civil war veteran, having served in Company "C," Third Missouri Infantry. At the time of his death he was a member of Lincoln Post No. 1, and also a member of the First United Brethren church.

He is survived by four sons, George Cain, Topeka; Merle Cain, Washington, D.C.; Roy Cain, Los Angeles, Cal., and Ivan Cain, Needles, Cal.; also two daughters, Mrs. Helen Leighan, Perry, Okla., and Mrs. P.E. Talley, Topeka.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed.

Funeral services for Joseph Cain, who died Sunday, will be held from the First United Brethren church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Burial in the Mount Hope cemetery.
