PIONNER CITIZEN OF SALTY DEAD

E. C. COFFEY HAD RESIDED IN TEXAS SINCE YEAR 1868.

Died at the family home in the Salty neighborhood at 9:45 o'clock Monday, June 6, 1921, Mr. E. C. Caffey. He was born December 20th, 1837 in Montgomery county, Alabama, and lived his childhood days in the county of his nativity. Reaching manhood's estate he married Miss Rena Carter, and to this union two children were born, one dying in infancy; the other, Charley Caffey, now living near the home place in Milam county.

In the year 1868, Mr. Caffey was married to Miss Rebecca E. Thomas, also of Montgomery county, Alabama and they had eight children, six of whom are now living. He moved his family to Texas in 1874, and settled in Bastrop county, near the Colorado river, later moving to the Salty community in Milam county, where with the exception of a few years spent in Thorndale, he has since lived. A farmer by occupation, he so lived that he made for himself many friends. The last two years his health had not been so good, and some two weeks ago he developed dropsy, which caused his demise. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. P. R. White at 4 p. m. Tuesday at the Salty church and the remains will rest in the cemetery near where his life knew so many happy years.

The pall bearers were: D. W. Cowan, Gus Newton, Dr. E. L. Laurence, F. E. Stiles and Sam Clement of Thorndale, Homer Turner, Rockdale.

Besides his own children, Mr. and Mrs. Caffey helped to raise thirteen orphan children. Mrs. Caffey, while mourning his loss, will share the sorrow with 43 grand-children, 37 great grandchildren and these sons and daughters: O. L., S. A. and T. A. Caffey of Salty, Mrs. R. M. Beard, near Thorndale, Mrs. T. L. King of Ellis county, Mrs. J. H. Hyde, Thorndale.--Thorndale Champion.
