WARWICK- Bayard A. Cadwell, 79, died on Friday, October 15, 2004 at home. He had declining health for the past 16 months and getting 24 hour care at home.
Bayard was born in Orange, MA on October 8, 1925, the son of Robert F. and Gladys (Paige) Cadwell.
He grew up in Orange and served in the 8th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion, United States Marines, from 1943 to 1946. He was in battle at Okinawa.
Upon returning from the war, he finished senior year at Orange High School. After graduation he went to work at the former Whit's Diner in Orange center, where he met two important people- Bob Whitney and the future Mrs. Cadwell. Dona, his wife, helped Bayard get a degree in teaching at Fitchburg State Teachers College. Bayard and family moved to Statford, Connecticut, where he taught shop for eighteen years. During the summer, he worked at children's camps.
In 1967, the family started Camp Catamount in Warwick. For eleven years, Bayard took youths on hiking and canoeing trips in New England.
In 1973, Bayard and family moved to Warwick permanently. He taught at Athol and Amherst Public Schools. He retired in 1993. Since then, he has been spending time in Warwick gardening, reading, and building boats.
His wife, Dona Cadwell, predeceased him in 1998.
He is survived by his son Charles and wife Mary Shapiro, and children Molly Cadwell and Anna Cadwell; Daughter Deborah Cadwell; son Robb Cadwell and his wife Sengthian Cadwell and son Bayard; son Jack Cadwell, and wife Karro Frost, and daughters Dana Cadwell Frost, and Amanda Cadwell Frost. He is also survived by three sisters, Barbara Perrault of Wakefield, Elizabeth Deegan of Orange, and Jean Ray of Boise, Idaho.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon, October 19, 2004 at 2:00 PM at the Metcalf Memorial Chapel, Athol Road, Warwick, MA. Interment will follow in Warwick Center Cemetery.
There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Dona Cadwell Scholarship Fund, Pioneer Valley Regional School, F. Sumner Turner Drive, Northfield, MA 01360.
