Florence was born to Herschell V and Ida L Cade. Her father came from a long line of farmers, from Georgia, Arkansas to Texas. She met and married Sidney Benjamin "Nick" Bennett in Texas. From there, Sidney and she moved to New Mexico, where their first daughter was born. They left soon after and their son Elbert was born at Cooley, Arizona. Nick was a teamster for the town of Cooley. Her parents had also moved with them. They lived in several little areas around Cooley. After having another son Bennie and another daughter, Elva Lee, they all went back to Texas. Before returning to Arizona, they had another daughter, Jewel. While in New Mexico, on the return trip they lost their son Bennie, in Hagerman. They also had a daughter, Iris Ellen, there. Gladys and Loretta was their last daughters, being born in Arizona. Florence believed all the girls, right down to the smallest one, should have chores to do and learn to do handwork. So, when the last chore was done each day, they would all get out their handwork, crochet, knitting, tatting or embroidery. My mother said Loretta was quite small and had worked on a handkerchif so long it was almost black. Florence could do all the handwork and quilting. She would, with closed eyes, sit and tat. One year she tatted a round table cloth for a 52" table. She won best of show at the Greenlee County Fair and the Arizona State Fair. A handwork magazine wanted to buy her pattern, but she would not hear of it. The last place they lived was at Sheldon, Arizona. Grandma Bennett gave me some tatted items which I still have.
