Farmer in Ill Health Takes Life

Marshall Byrum, 33 year old farmer living on Blakesburg Route 3, one mile southeast of the Christiansburg Church, took his own life about 5:20 P.M. Thursday when he shot himself with a .12 gauge shotgun in a bedroom of the Byrum home.

Coroner John Drake pronounced the cause of death as suicide and said there would be no inquest. Despondency over ill health was believed to have been the cause.

Byrum had been suffering from influenza recently, it was understood, although he had assisted in work on the farm. His wife was in the kitchen of the home when she heard the shot. The charge struck Byrum in the chest.

Surviving are Byrum's wife, Mrs. Editha Byrum; four children, Verna, Kenneth, Henry and James Richard, all at home; three sisters, Mrs. Leora McElroy of Chillicothe, and Mrs. Bessie Miller and Mrs. Ruth Warner of Ottumwa; two brothers, Joe Byrum and J. Leslie Byrum both of Ottumwa.

Mr. Byrum was a member of the Brotherhood of American Yeomen.

Funeral services will be held in Ottumwa, Saturday afternoon at 2 o"clock from the Johnson funeral chapel and from the Willard Street Methodist Episcopal church at 2:30, conducted by the Rev. L. H. Lanning, Methodist pastor at Centerville and former pastor of the Willard Street Church. The Rev. Mr. Lanning will be assisted by the Rev. H. S. Wilkinson, D. D. present pastor of the Willard Street church. Burial will be made in the Shaul Cemetery.
