John was born on Oct. 3, 1928, in Waterbury, son of the late Ethel (Partridge) Byrnes and John Byrnes, both of Waterbury. He married Virginia Hansen in 1953 and remarried in 1977.
John was a proud military veteran, attaining the rank of sergeant in the U.S. Army.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Tina; a son, Bruce Byrnes (Susan) of Lake Wylie, S.C.; a daughter, Catherine Smoyer (Jess) of Salt Lake City, Utah; a daughter, Meghan Byrnes Weinreich (Jeff) of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Michael Byrnes of Hickory, N.C.; six grandchildren, Jason, Kelly, Kristen, Kellie, Robyn and Jameson; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. John was predeceased by his brother, Charles Beard, his sisters, Marguerite Dunne and Ann Brouillard, and his first wife, Virginia (Hansen) Byrnes.
A funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2014, at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, Simpsonville, S.C. Inurnment with military honors will be in Arlington National Cemetery, anticipated in late spring 2015. Family and friends may visit www.JohnHByrnes.com for more information.
