FUNERAL SERVICES FOR FORMER BARING MAN
Alphonsus Byrne, 68, of Earlham, Iowa, a native and former resident of near Baring, died Thursday morning,
March 30, 1967, following a short illness. Mr. and Mrs. Byrne owned and operated a store at Earlham. He was a brother of the late John Byrne of Edina who was circuit clerk and recorder of Knox County for several years.
The Requiem Mass was Monday morning at Earlham the the body was brought to the Kriegshauser Funeral Home here where rosary was recited at 7:30 that evening. Graveside services were Tuesday morning in St. Aloysius Cemetery at Baring with the Rev. Edwin Schmidt officiating.
Surviving Mr. Byrne are his wife, who was Mary Bricker before their marriage June 15, 1925, two sons, Dr. George D. Byrne, who teaches in the mathematics department of the University of Pittsburg, Pa., and Terence E. byrne, who works for the U. S. Government in Washington, D.C., a sister, Mrs. Frances Byrne Grace, of Phoenix, Ariz., and five grandchildren.
Alphonus Dennis Byrne was born April 21, 1898, the youngest of the six children of Edward and Mary Kavanaugh Byrne, and after his marriage they lived in Baring where he worked at Jim Delaney's Produce House until Sept. 1926, when they bought a produce house in Earlham and moved there. After selling that business he worked in a store for his brother-in-law and wife, R. J. and Cecile Lewis. In September, 1941, he and Mrs. Byrne bought their own grocery store and moved it into the building where the Lewis store had been when Mr. and Mrs. Lewis moved to California. Mr. Byrne suffered a heart attack January, 1966, and was confined to their apartment for many months. Deciding that Mrs. Byrne could not carry on alone, they liquidated the stock and retired Dec. 31, 1966.
He was a member of the All Saints Parish at Stuart, Iowa, for over forty years and a member of the Knights of Columbus the last four years.
His parents and two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
