John Riley Byrd was the son of John William Bird and Margaret "Maggie" Walker Bird. He married Effie M. Brown on November 11, 1917 (license date), in Hardin County, Tennessee. To this union was born children, including John Evan, Floyd Marshall, Bessie, Carl Milton, Lois Bernice (Lawrence), Alton, Deloris, and Horace.

After Effie's death, John married Ulala Elaine Hedge, the daughter of Leslie and Thelma Hedge, in Madison County, Alabama, on March 24, 1939. This was the second marriage for both - John, a 40 year old widower, and Ulala, 19 year old woman who had divorced a month prior in Blytheville, AR. John and Eulala's marriage later ended in divorce as well. Eulala died in 2003, having been married at least five times.

In 1944, John married the widowed mother of four, Mamie Larie Farrar Roberts; and to this union was born one daughter, Beverly.

According to his death certificate, John died on December 25, 1973, at 9:30 a.m.. The state form indicates that he was divorced, and that he had worked as an investigator/private detective. His residence at the time of his death was 3400 Soldiers Home Road, in West Lafayette (Tippecanoe County), Indiana. His cause of death is listed simply as "natural causes".
