On Tuesday morning, at 1:13 a.m. May 29, God dispatched his angel to Palmetto Richland Memorial in Columbia to beacon home Mrs. Deloris Thomas Byrd.
Deloris was born Oct. 30, 1934, in Bamberg. She was the eldest of five children born to the late Mr. Chassie Thomas and Mrs. Juanita Daniels Thomas.
At an early age, she became a baptized member of Goodland Baptist Church and later transferred her membership to Mays Chapel United Methodist Church. As a servant of God, she served faithfully in the following capacities: Sunday School Superintendent, Holy Communion Stewart, Senior Choir, Trustee Board, United Methodist Women Auxiliary, Pastor's Parish Relations Committee, Treasurer of the Senior Arts and Crafts Auxiliary and Shalom Community Mission Project. Also, she was the Claflin University Senior Citizen Pageant Queen 2006-2007.
She received her early education in the public schools of Bamberg County and graduated from Richard Carroll High School. She was employed as a seamtress for many years with the Branchville Sewing Factory of Branchville and Smoaks Manufacturing of Smoaks. Deloris also worked with Spartan's (Hardees) Food Service for three years and finally retired from the Hampton Child Care Development Center of Bowman in 2003, after four years of service.
Great things come to those who wait upon the Lord; They shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run and not be weary; They shall walk and not faint. In the year of 1953, she was joined in holy matrimony to Mr. James Byrd Sr. To this union six children were born. One daughter, Catherine Byrd Bowman and one grandchild, Stella Elaine Bowman preceded her in death.
