Bertha Bynum Askins, the daughter of James Isaac and Anna Ray Bynum, married John W. Askins in Johnson County, Arkansas in 1933. John was the son of John Wilkins and Emmaline E. Reed Askins. John and Bertha were the parents of one son.
Bertha's oldest grandson likes to tell that two of his fondest memories of his grandmother were her famous sour gooseberry pies, which she made often, and her use of Noxema skin cream at bedtime. However, the pies were her trademark. Folks knew Bertha could always be counted on for a pie at a pot luck dinner - if not a gooseberry pie, then it was a peach pie from homegrown peaches.
Bertha maintained a kind smile and a gentle nature everywhere she went. She had many friends and everyone loved her sweet spirit.
Bertha died at the Mercy Hospital/Turner Memorial at Ozark, Arkansas. She was survived by two sisters, (Leola Hilton has as since passed away), and two brothers, (Robert Bynam and Ralph Bynam, also now deceased). In addition to her siblings, Bertha was survived by her son, three grand children, ten great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great grand child, all of whom are still living at this current date in 2011.
Bertha's funeral was held at the Stillwell Bible Baptist Church on Monday, May 21, 2001. The minister of the church officiated. Bertha was a lifelong, active member at that church.
