Dorothy Shaw Autry, 83, of Amarillo died Monday, Sept. 26, 2005.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Marty Hamrick, associate pastor at Polk Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery.
Dorothy, born July 15, 1922, in Hugo, Okla., was raised in Hugo and Ada, Okla. She moved to Amarillo in the 1940s to accept a job as staff secretary with the USO, where she originated a placement service for military wives.
In 1949, she and her husband opened Shaw & Associates, the second private employment agency in Amarillo. She continued operating the business until it was sold in 1985. Dorothy was one of the first in the nation to become a certified Personal Consultant when the certification tests were first given in 1960. Through her business she was a charter member of National Personnel Associates.
She was an active member of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce, serving on the Convention & Visitors Council, The Women's Council, the Aviation Committee and the Tourism Committee. She had served on the Amarillo Airport Board, was a member of the Esther McCrory Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, First Christian Church, the High Plains Aviation Association, and a charter member of The Texas Aviation Historical Society.
Her first husband, J. Allen Shaw, preceded her in death in 1978.
In 1993 she married R. Bruce Autry, and her husband and many friends survive her.
The family suggests memorials be to the Don & Sybil Harrington Cancer Center, 1500 Wallace Blvd, Amarillo, TX 79105.
