Alberta Byars, 89, of Amarillo died Monday, Oct. 8, 2007.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Immanuel Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Dodson officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street.
Mrs. Byars was born Sept. 3, 1918, to Oba and Mabel Bouma in Arcadia, Neb. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church for more than 50 years and most of that time was helping in the baby nursery.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Byars; a daughter, Carroll Shanks; a granddaughter, Wendee Phillips; two grandsons, Steve Tate and Randy Tate; a sister, Iona Hooks; and a brother, Donald McClure.
Survivors include six daughters, Mona Sharp and husband Raymond of Camp Verde, Ariz., Ruby Barlow of Amarillo, Velma Tate and husband Gene of Lake Worth. Lawana Denny and husband Charles of Hurst, Rita Erdman and husband Jerry of Waco and Cathy Wyatt and husband Tom of Greeley, Colo.; a son, Marvin Byars of Amarillo; two sisters, Doris Hail of Amarillo and Naomi Walker and husband Harry of Oregon; 15 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren including Valerie Tafoya; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
