Charles was most likely born in the Chicago area. His father would become one of the largest yellow pine lumber barons in the United States. His father J.S. Butterfield , along with a partner named Norwood build a mill in south Mississippi. They named the town after a combination of their names. Norfield, Mississippi.

Charles later became president and after his first wife died he married Vivienne who was 13 years younger. He built a home in Brookhaven for her, which till this day is the towns most magnificent structure. When he retired they moved to Florida for reasons unknown.
