Cleotilde Tonita Bustos Martinez, age 87, a resident of Española, passed away on Sunday, February 01, 2009, following a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Epimenio and Ciprianita Trujillo Bustos; husband, Eloy Enrique Martinez; sons, Epimenio and Albert Anthony Martinez; brothers, Emiliano (1st wife Bersabe), Jose Isa, Ruby Pacheco and husband Pablo, Samuelita Pacheco and husband Adelaido, Esequiel and wife Josie, Reynel and wife Eduarda, Delfinio, Corinna Martinez; grand-daughters, Pamela Martinez Cordova and Stephanie Salazar; in-laws, Enrique and Adelina Aguilar Martinez; brothers-in-law, Severino (and wife Marylou), Alfonso (and wives Lea and Vicky), Rudolfo, Napoleon, Rafael; sisters-in-law, Lupita Martinez Block (ex-husband Johnny Block), Cleofas Martinez and husband Nick Lujan, Prescilla Martinez and husband Alfonso Cruz. Cleotilde was born in El Llano, N.M. in 1922. She graduated from Santa Cruz High School In 1942. In 1943 she joined the war effort and worked in the Oakland, California shipyards as a "Rosie the Riveter." Cleo was a fun-loving, intelligent, hard-working woman, who insisted that her children all be well educated. Her children are now a lawyer, a doctor, a trucking firm owner, and an educator. All her children attended college. Cleo and her husband were active in many social, civic, and political groups. She and Eloy were active with the Boy Scouts, veterans' groups, and she even ran for county clerk in Rio Arriba County. She taught in a one-room school in El Llano (Española), and worked for several state agencies. She substituted in the Española Public Schools System until she was 77 years old. She is survived by her daughter, Cecilia Martinez Salazar and husband Miguel of Española; sons, Dr. Enrique Martinez of Las Cruces, N.M., Dennis T. Martinez and wife Antoinette, and Michael R. Martinez (Julie Baker) all of Albuquerque; sister, Esther Bustos Montoya of Española; sisters-in-law, Marcella Martinez Calloway of Huntsville, AL, Leticia (Tisha) Martinez Shelton of Pleasantville, MO., Isabel Martinez of Albuquerque, Rosita Bustos, Sylvia Martinez, Mary Bustos, and Josefina Bustos all of the Española Valley, and brothers-in-law, Ricardo Martinez, Cristobal Martinez (and wife Vangie) of Española, Pasqual Martinez (and wife Stella) of Albuquerque; 19 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren and various other relatives and friends, and a special friend, Maria Trujillo. A rosary was held on Monday, February 2, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, February 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Santa Cruz, burial followed at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery. Assisting the family as pallbearers were Levi Martinez, Tim Mora, Miguel Martinez, Javier Martinez, Enrique Martinez, Phillip Martinez, Richard Trujillo and Carlos Lionel Martinez. Any contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Fund. Cleo's family wishes to thank the Española Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the loving care they gave her.
