Kathryn E. "Katy" Thorne, 86, of Amarillo died on Sunday, April 28, 2013.

Graveside services will be at noon Saturday in Lipscomb Cemetery in Lipscomb. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St.

Katy was the surviving wife of William Joe "Bill" Thorne. She was born in 1927, in Canadian as the younger of two children of Lloyd Gates Bussard and Mildred Sarah Keffer Bussard. Bill was born in 1926, in Spearman as the youngest of four children of William Quincy Thorne and Ruby Minerva Ross Thorne.

Katy married Bill in 1945 in her parents' home in Locust Grove of Lipscomb County. At the time of Bill's death in 2006, Bill and Katy had been married to each other for more than 61 years. They had two children, Stanley Charles Thorne and Stephen L. Thorne Sr.

Both Bill and Katy were employed by Amarillo public schools, Bill as an elementary school principal and Katy as an elementary school teacher. They shared a profound love for schoolchildren and nurtured each and every child in the hope they could help parents equip their children for a successful life. Even during retirement, they both worked with students in such programs as Helping One Student To Succeed, a one-on-one tutored reading program.

Bill and Katy were longtime active members of First Baptist Church in Amarillo. They thoroughly enjoyed sight
seeing together and experienced extensive travel throughout the United States and abroad. Katy enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening at her home, being a super fan of the Dallas Cowboys, and keeping up with her children and grandchildren. Katy's constant companion since Bill passed on has been Sugar, an overfinished female Dachshund.

Survivors include two sons, Stan and Steve; Stan's three children, Adam, Daniel and Rebekah; Adam's wife, Joella, and their two girls, Sydney and Camryn; Steve and wife Jessie, and their six children, Stephen Jr., Lauren, Robert, Renee, Russell and Jackie; and Steve and Jessie's seven grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to the church or a favorite charity of your choice in Katy's name.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
