Isaac was the son of John Busby and Phoebe Pinnell Boggess. He married Sarah Ann Cotty on January 16, 1845.

Isaac was 4, in 1826 when the family moved from Virginia to Indiana; less than 100 people lived in Madison County. Isaac's education was limited to two months per year. Married at age 23, Isaac and Sarah began a series of moves, see Biography. In 1886, Isaac and Sarah left their 320 acre farm and made their home on 2-1/2 acres in Fairmount near Dr J. W. Turner.
