Darlene I. Bates, the daughter of Kenneth and Anna (Arthur) Burwell, was born April 19, 1928, in Belleville and passed away on June 26, 2009, at the Select Specialty Hospital at Overland Park at the age of 81 years, 2 months and 7 days.
Darlene grew up and attended schools at Belleville, graduating from Belleville High School. On June 4, 1946, she was united in marriage to Dewey L. Bates and to this union was born Lois, Bernice and Dewey. The couple made their home in Belleville.
Darlene was a homemaker most of all of her life. In her early years, she worked as a nurse's aide at Belleville-Biderwell Hospital. In the 1960s, she owned and operated Daylight Donuts in Belleville.
Darlene was a member of American Legion Auxiliary of Belleville. She enjoyed welcoming family and guests into her home and never knew a stranger. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Dewey L. Bates, on May 20, 2003.
Darlene is survived by a son, Dewey K. Bates and wife Stacy J., of Belleville; two daughters, Lois Bates, of Salina, and Bernice Bates, of Kansas City, Kan; a cousin, Bill Burwell and wife Lana, of Yakima, Wash.; and other relatives and many friends.
Graveside memorial services were held July 11 in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, rural Belleville, with Pastor Jim Bates officiating.
