Rev. Ernest A. Burtle, 60 pastor of St. Joseph's church, Mt. Sterling, and first pastor and founder of St. Aloysius parish at Springfield, died suddenlty of a heart attack while giving instructions to young boys at a Mt. Sterling home at 7:30 p. m. today. Father Burtle had gone to the residence of Julius Weggs and had started giving instructions to the high school boys when he suddenlty collapsed and died. Father Burtle was born Oct. 17, 1895, at Glenarm, a son of Mr. and Mrs. James R. Burtle. He attended Quincy college and was graduated from Georgetown university, Washington, D. C., in 1920. He was ordained at Kenrick seminary in St. Louis, Mo., in 1923. After spending two years at Immaculate Conception church, Mattoon, and Routt college, Jacksonville, he was appointed administrator of St. Barbara's church in Springfield. His predecessor at St. Barbara's was conducting a series of instruction classes in the northeastern section of Springfield and Father Burtle began organizing the group into a parish. In 1931 the parish was established and named St. Aloysius with Father Burtle as pastor. He resigned in 1938 to enter the Trappist monastery at Gathsemane, Ky., where he spent one year. He had been pastor of St. Joseph's church in Mt. Sterling since September, 1939. Father Burtle was a member of the American Legion and was a chaplain in the U. S. army reserve from 1925 until 1938. Father Burtle is survived by two brothers, Harry, Glenarm, and Walter Burtle, Auburn, and four sisters, Mrs. L. A. White, Sapulpa, Okla.; Mrs. C. R. Ketterer and Misses Ursula and Eleanor Burtle, all of Springfield. The body was taken to the Hufnagel funeral home.

Pontifical high mass for Rev. Ernest A. Burtle, 60, pastor of St. Joseph's church, Mt. Sterling, and first pastor and founder of St. Aloysius parish at Springfield, will be said at 11 a. m. Tuesday at St. Joseph's church. Bishop William A. O'Connor, of Springfield, will be the celebrant. Burial will be at Mt. Sterling. Office of the dead will be recited by the priests at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday at the church. Father Burtle died suddently of a heart attack at 7:30 p. m. Thursday, while giving instructions to young boys at the home of Julius Weggs, of Mt. Sterling. Also participating in the services will be Msgr. William Haug, Springfield, master of ceremonies; Rev. Francis Dirksen, Springfield, assistant master of ceremonies; Rev. P. J. Fox, Quincy, assistant priest; Rev. Stanley Yunker, Springfield, and Rev. Peter Schlepphorst, Quincy, deacon of the mass; Rev. Cullen O'Brien, Diveron, subdeacon. The sermon will be delivered by Msgr. Henry Schnelton, Quincy. Father Burtle's body is at Hufnagel funeral home and will be removed Sunday afternoon to the church, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p. m. Sunday and at 7:30 p. m. Monday.
