John was living in Madisonville, TX when he entered the service and was the pilot of a B-26C Invader bomber with the 13th Bomber Squadron, 3rd Bomber Wing based at Kunsan Air Base (K-8), Korea.
On July 29, 1951, on returning from a night intruder mission, the aircraft struck a mountain while trying to land at Suwon Air Base (K-13).
His remains were recovered.
First Lieutenant Burtis was awarded the Purple Heart, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
