Sarah Francis Buruss Herndon Buban died January 9, 2007 at the age of 93 at the Extended Care Unit of Carroll County Memorial Hospital.

She was a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother of a loving family.
Her family and many in the community call her "Granny" and even "Groovy Granny".

She was born on April 8, 1913 in Miami, Missouri and lived in Miami, Carrollton, Kansas City Missouri; Ottawa, Kansas; and Washington, DC.

On March 7, 1935 she married Ben Gilkey Herndon. Ben died in March 1970. On August 17, 1973 she married Tony Buban.
Tony died in October of 2003.

She had a long and varied career in education. She graduated from Christian College and began teaching in country schools near Carrollton riding to and from school on her own horse.
Her first car was a 1929 Overland Coupe, which was a great improvement over the horse. She went on to teach nursery school in Kansas City.

At the beginning of World War II she moved to Washington, DC with Ben and her daughter Sally. Ben was with the Department of Agriculture when the Department moved from Kansas City to Washington, DC. In Washington, Sarah taught nursery school and kindergarten and received a degree from American University. While in Washington, two more daughters were born, Harriett and Suzy.

n 1968 she moved back to Carrollton where she continued teaching, introduced counseling to the elementary schools, "Parents as Teachers" (PAT) to preschoolers and finished her career as an elementary counselor.

She was a Board Member of the American Cancer Society, President of the Carrollton Teachers Association, a member of the Carrollton Women's Club, The Daughters of the American Revolution, Retired Missouri Teachers Association, School Counselors of Missouri, and the Carrollton Country Club.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Sally and Lee Harmony of Springfield, Virginia; Harriett and Sam Lock of Carrollton, Missouri; Suzy and Bob Shue of Fairfax Station, Virginia; step-daughter Tonya Van Cleve of Anna Belle Island, Florida, thirteen grandchildren, Sally Lew, Mary Leigh, Lee III, Tracey, Catherine, Gregory, Jennifer, Sarah Cate, Nathan, Samantha, Abigale, David and Cliff; twenty-four great grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Megan, Ryan, Tessa, Leigh Ann, Sean, Jack, Kristen, Lauren, Brandon, Luke, Savannah, Brooklynne, Emma, Ben, Sam, Tommy, Mac, Ella Jane, Jake, Josselyn, Roy and Sarah; and four great great grandchildren, Cameron, Ethan, Hayden and Sarah Alexis.
