" in memory of Mrs. Elizabeth T. Allen, the amiable and much lamented consort of Mr. Andrew V. Allen and all their beloved and promising children All of whom in their dwelling house were swept in the flood and drowned during the dreadful hurricane and high tide on the memorable
23d September 1815."
The inscription continues : "The truly
lamented wife and beloved mother was forewarned and previously prepared for death. The surviving husband and father has ordered this monument to perpetuate the memory of those that were most dear to him "
Let your tears flow o'er this silent urn
But still with hope and moderation mourn."
