William James "Bill" Burns, 77, passed away Monday at his home.
Born in Plymouth Township, Pennsylvania, formally a resident of Bridgeton, and Somers Point resident for 48 years.
In his early years he served in the U.S. Navy on board the USS Thuban during the Korean Conflict.
He held a great interest in photography and spent time as a photographer for Olan Mills. His passion was for carpentry, and it was through this trade he stayed employed by several area contractors.
Bill was a life member of the Somers Point Vol. Fire Co. #2. He belonged to the Somers Point Vol. Rescue Squad and served as Chief for several years. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 352 in Somers Point where he served as Commander. He loved playing his ukulele and banjo; he was a member and president of the Ventnor City String Band and was inducted into the Penn Jersey String Band Associations Hall of Fame in the Mummers Museum in Philadelphia. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather; he enjoyed spending time with his family and living his life to the fullest. He loved passing time teaching his grandchildren the art of carpentry.
Bill was predeceased by his beautiful wife Hattie of 51 years, his parents Harry C. and Mary, brothers Harry, John and Robert, and grandson Daniel Bell.
He was survived by his sister Mary Jane Smuul, his three daughters, Kathleen Dolby (Bill), Cherilee Keeper (Les) and Sharon Jaindl (Jay), his 11 grandchildren Thomas Jr. and David Mangano, Shannon and Thomas Jr Dawson, Sydney, Jason and Jordan Jaindl, Willard Jr, Lori and Tabatha Dolby and Michael Keeper. He also had 17 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Middleton-Stroble & Zale Funeral 304 Shore Road, Somers Point. Burial Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor.
