His father was George W. Burns, a Civil War veteran who died 25 Apr 1914 at the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Illinois. A Bloomington Pantagraph article reports that Lawrence was called to Quincy on account of his death and brought his body back for burial in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
