|Death: ||May 15, 2004|
Norman C. Burns, Jr., 81, of Lawrence Township, passed away on Saturday morning, May 15, 2004 at his home.
Born in Newport, the son of the late Norman C. and Florence S. Ewan Burns, he was the husband of the late Hazel R. Table Burns. Mr. Burns had been a Cedarville resident all his life.
Norman started working at a young age for Rainears' Dairy in Bridgeton, before marrying Hazel, and then served in the United States Army during World War II. After his discharge from the armed forces, he dabbled in a few careers before settling in his lifetime career. He'd worked as an oysterman, was a horse trader, owned and operated both the Cedarville Auction and the Newport Auto Sales, before owning the Norman Burns Used Cars and Trucks in Cedarville for over 40 years. He loved people more than anything else, so he began to work alongside Father Carmen of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Vineland, by delivering food baskets to anyone he thought needed help. Norman hosted Christmas parties at the Cedarville Municipal Hall, was the President of the Lawrence Township Memorial Parade Committee for several years, and was a founding member of Lawrence Township Recreation Committee. He will be most remembered as President of the Lawrence Township Free Commodity Services, always involved in the "Food Program" he had been President since the start of the service in 1990.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Woody of Dividing Creek and Juanita Wolbert of Cedarville; two sisters, Nina Woolf of Vineland and Juanita Gale of Newport; one brother, Bill Burns of Port Elizabeth; four granddaughters, Eula Norcross and her husband Albert of Millville, Christy Anderson and her husband Tony of Cedarville, Juanita Lacy and her husband John of North Carolina and Stephanie McGarrity of Newport; three grandsons, Joe Woody and his wife Julie of Wisconsin and Charlie Woody and Michael McGarrity both of Cedarville; nine great-grandchildren, Norman Woody, Erica Fichera, Anthony Woody, Hazel Woody, Zachery Woody, Brittney Anderson, John Lacy, Tiffany Lacy and Justin Lacy.
