John was the son of William B. Burns (b. 11 May 1856 in Randolph County, IL) and Sarah C. Booth (b. 8 Feb 1860 Randolph County, IL).

John married Florence Campbell on 22 Sep 1912 in Bowie County, TX. John and Florence had the following children: Lynn and Woodrow Wilson. Florence died in 1922.

John married a second time to Floy Bell Kemp (b. 2 Oct 1899 in Louisiana). John and Floy had the following children: Curtis Lee, Homer Lee, Mary Ellen, John Morris, John Dow (Jr.), Willie Ree, William Henry, Dow Edward, Rosa Lee, Marie, and Dorothy.

Also found: the 1920 Bowie County census shows John and Florence at age 25, with sons Len (written as Lynn) at age 5 and Woodrow at age 4. Death certificate for Florence Burns shows she died April 9, 1922, with J. D. Burns as the informant and B. W. Campbell as father. The Texas Death Index shows Floy Bell Burns died April 16, 1979.
