Richard Matthew "Dick" Burns, 82, died Monday September 17, 2012 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.

He was born in Jersey City on October 8, 1929, the son of John Henry and Helen Burns. He is predeceased by his parents, brother John Burns and sisters Ruth Demarco and Frances McFadden, and his eldest son, Richard Burns.

Dick met his wife Martha in Jersey City, they were married in 1953. The family lived in Middletown for 49 years. Most recently, Dick lived at Bayside Manor, Keansburg, where Martha resides.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a lineman and mechanic for Public Service Electric and Gas, Secaucus. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, a U.S. Army veteran, member of Middletown Elks BPOE 2179, where he was honored as 1983 Elk of the Year, VFW Post 2179, Port Monmouth, and American Legion Post 388, Leonardo. During his retirement years, he often traveled with Martha and their fellow Elks to the Caribbean for vacations. He delivered Meals on Wheels in Middletown, and enjoyed golf, reading, Turner Classic Movies and following the exploits of the Mets and Jets.

Dick was eternally devoted to Martha, and took pride in achievements both great and small of all his children. He had an inexhaustible repertoire of stories and anecdotes about the good old days in Jersey City, never forgot a joke that needed retelling and was a self-professed "fountain of useless information."
