LAKELAND -- Mr. David Burnett, who was described as a very hard worker, was just promoted to plant production manager for U.S. Agri-Chemicals Corp. a year ago."He really had good relationships with his men at work. He respected them and spoke very highly of them," his daughter, Allison Ventura of Grenada, West Indies, said.Mr. Burnett died of a heart attack Wednesday (May 12, 2004) at U.S. Agri-Chemicals Corp. He was 54.He was born in South Bend, Ind., on Dec. 2, 1949. He graduated from Central High School in San Angelo, Texas, where he met his future wife, and the couple began dating at the age of 16. In 1970, the couple wed. Mr. Burnett played on the high school football team, which won the state championship in 1966. He also played football for two years at Cisco Junior College in Cisco, Texas. While living in Texas, he was active in the Presbyterian churches, serving as an elder and trustee.He came to Lakeland from Texas in 1986. He began working for U.S. Agri-Chemicals Corp. in 1989, where he held the title of shift supervisor until his promotion a year ago.He was an avid golfer and held a membership at the Bartow Golf Course. He also enjoyed reading. "He loved history. He was a big history buff. He knew everything about history," Ventura said. "He was a very simple man. He didn't like a lot of group interaction. He liked a very intimate group, and he was very funny. He had a good sense of humor. He just knew a lot of things about life."He was a Master Mason. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church at Lake Hollingsworth.In addition to his daughter, Mr. Burnett is survived by his wife, Sherry M. Burnett; daughter, Amy Gaughf, Tallahassee; brothers, Tom Burnett, Indianapolis, Jim Burnett, Enid, Okla.; one grandson.Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Gentry-Morrison Southside Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland.
