Carlyle G. Burland, 86, of 6 Penwood Apartments and formerly of the Springfield, Mass., area, died Monday in a Boscawen nursing home.
He was a civil engineer, and worked for the Massachusetts Department of Public Works' Division of Highways. He had also worked for Lockwood Greene Engineers Inc., and for the New Hampshire Department of Highways Planning Division for many years.
Born in Booneville, N.Y., he lived in the Springfield area when he worked for the Massachusetts Highway Department.
He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and served with the Seabees in the Pacific theater.
He later moved to Penacook, and was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Concord.
He was a life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Retired Officers Association.
Active in the Masons, he was a member of the Blazing Star Lodge of Concord, the Trinity Royal Arch Chapter of the Horace Chase Council, and the New Hampshire Consistory (32nd degree) of the Valley of Nashua.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, the former Mildred Ruby; two sons, Carlyle G. Jr. of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Dean A. of Amherst, N.H.; a daughter, Janice L. Burns of Lancaster, Pa.; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday morning in the church, with burial in the afternoon at Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster, Mass. Calling hours are Thursday evening at Bennett Funeral Home, 209 North Main St., Concord.
