Mother of Four, Missing Days,
Negro Boy Discovers Body
In Small Pond Near Here
Body of Mrs. Nellie Bowden, 48 year old mother of four children, was found head down in a small pond about two and one half miles north of here Monday afternoon. The body was found by a 15 year old Negro boy.
Missing since 1 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, the widow had been the object of a widespread search by peace officers, relatives and friends of the family.
No trace had been found of the woman until Raymond James Eastman, 13 year old Negro, came upon the body, part of which was showing on the surface of the small pasture pool in about two and one half feet of water.
The Sheriff's office was notified by the boy's father and Sheriff J.J. Ratliff, Chief Deputy George Robertson, Assistant County Attorney A.M. Harrison, Justice of the Peace R.L. Johnson, Captain Troy McCormick and Patrolmen Arthur Payne and Ben White of the City Police Department went to the scene. The body was removed by Brown Roden Funeral Home after an inquest was held.
Justice Johnson's inquest verdict was "death by drowning."
She was identified by Ed Burks, a brother, who accompanied officers to the scene.
The pool where the body was found is about two and one half miles directly north of here and near the Frisco Railroad right of way. The pond is on property owned by the John McCormick estate.
