Carol Jeanne Burkett
Carol Jeanne Burkett, 84, of Ormond Beach passed away Friday, November 1, 2013 surrounded by her family. Carol will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was born on October 10, 1929 in East St. Louis, Illinois. She graduated from East St. Louis Senior High School, William Woods College in Fulton, Mo., and Miss Hickey's School for Secretaries in St. Louis.
She married her high school sweetheart and the love of her life, Charles (Bussie) Edward Burkett on February 7, 1953. As a young woman, she was a soloist at her church for many weddings and funerals and taught Sunday School along side her husband. She worked for the government while her husband was stationed at Ft. Monroe, VA.
After the birth of her 1st child, she was a stay-at-home mom working only occasionally at the family donut shop business. In 1965, the family relocated to Daytona Beach. She had a love for music and performed in many Daytona Playhouse productions including "The King and I" and "The Boyfriend" and was a member of the Playhouse Guild. She was the co-owner of Charles E. Burkett and Associates starting in 1979 and took over operations after her husband's death in 1986 until she retired in 1996.
Through the years she was involved in several organizations. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach where she sang in the choir for over 30 years and was active in UMW and the scholarship committee. She was the past President of the PTA for both Seabreeze Junior and Senior High Schools and past president of the Woman's Auxiliary of Civil Engineers. She had a love for Mickey Mouse and Disney World where she took her grandchildren every summer. She enjoyed sports especially baseball and her team the St. Louis Cardinals. She also enjoyed NASCAR, tennis and bowling but her real love was for her family especially her children and grandchildren. With nine grandchildren growing up in the area, she never missed a game or show where they performed which included every sport from baseball and softball to gymnastics and volleyball. She was a true "Sandcrab" even though she was not a graduate because all of her children and grandchildren graduated from Seabreeze. She was featured in the Daytona Beach News Journal for having five granddaughters as SHS cheerleaders in 3 different squads the same year. She was affectionately known as "Grandma" to many of her grand children's friends and she loved seeing all of them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward and her parents, Walter and Ruby Klie.
She is survived by her children, Dr. Charles (Monica) Burkett, Linda (Sam) Merrill and Curtis (Susan) Burkett, all of Ormond Beach. Also grandchildren, Brett (Ginny) Atlanta, Ga., Lindsay Merrill, Ft. Lauderdale, Kelly Merrill, Nashville Tn., Jenny (Matt) Widmaier, Atlanta, Ga., Heather (Mike) Bonner, Virginia Beach, Va., Emily Burkett, Tampa, Jillian, Kendall and Morgan Burkett, Ormond Beach; two great grandchildren, Charlotte and Rollins Widmaier, Atlanta, Ga., a brother-in-law, Ben (Patti) Burkett, Belleville, Ill. and several nephews and a niece.
Her family would like to thank Apex Home Healthcare Services and their caregivers who provided wonderful, loving care for their mother during the past several years and also a special thanks to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler for the help with her care during her final months. Her life will be celebrated on Sat., Nov. 9th at 11:00am at First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. Her family will receive friends today (Friday) from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Haigh-Black Funeral Home, 167 Vining Court, Ormond Beach. In lieu of other remembrances the family suggest contributions be made to First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach, 336 South Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach, FL 32176 OR The ALS Association, 1275 K Street NW Suite 1050, Washington DC 20005.
