TRAIN CRASH KILLS MIDDLETOWN MAN AT VERMONT CROSSING
John P. Burke Fatally Injured When Engine Hits Stalled Truck
Middletown, Aug. 27-(Special)
John P. Burke, 53, of Washington Street, Staddle Hill, was fatally injured at Sunderland, VT., a few miles south of Rutland today when a motor van in which he was riding was struck by a Rutland Railroad passenger train. His skull was fractured and he died within a few hours at the Putnam Memorial Hospital at Bennington, VT.
The van in which Mr. Burke was a passenger was one of two which had been used to take a consignment of horses from Hartford to the Champlain Valley Exposition at Essex Junction, VT. They were returning empty to Connecticut, the second truck, with Burke as a passenger and with Philip Plourde of Hartford as driver being towed by the other.
The accident occurred at the Wyman Crossing about two miles north of Arlington where the approach to the tracks is screened by trees and bushes. The first truck crossed the rails safely but its driver, apparently in an attempt to hurry, stalled his motor, leaving the second van squarely across the tracks. Burke was on the side struck by the locomotive, Plourde was only slightly injured.
Mr. Burke leaves his wife, Mrs. Anna (Potter) Burke: four daughters. Misses Frances M., Helen A. and Dorothy A. Burke, at home and Miss Hester L Burke of New Haven and three son: John E. Burke of Bedford,, Ind., and Arthur S. and Charles Potter Burke of Middletown. The body will be brought here for burial. Mr. Burke was born in Hartford and had lived here for 27 years.He would have observed his 53rd birthday today.
