Birth: May 3, 1921, USA
Death: Jun. 5, 2008
Gold Beach
Curry County
Oregon, USA

Dorothy Mae Carlton passed away peacefully in Gold Beach Oregon on June 5th, 2008 from complications due to heart failure and lung disease. Dorothy was born in Italy Texas on May 3rd, 1921 and grew up in east Texas. She moved to San Fransisco with her parents and younger sister Ruth in 1934 and spent her youth living there. She worked as a waitress at the Golden Gate International Exposition in San Fransisco and walked across the Golden Gate bridge the day it opened in 1937. Dorothy Married Alvin Oliver Cox in 1939 and had two children before the marriage ended in divorce. She then met the love of her life in 1946 riding on the bus to work. Otto Carlton was a young sailor on leave when he shipped out, they corresponded by mail. Otto sent Dorothy the money to buy the wedding rings and they were married on September 15,1947 in San Diego, California while Otto had been sent home on a hospital ship due to heat stroke on the lookout tower of one of his ships. He came home to marry and was also too sick to enjoy much of the short honeymoon in San Diego. Dorothy spent time in Washington DC and Bremerton Washington in Naval housing during WWII while Otto was in the service. In 1952 the family moved back to California and settled in Santa Clara. It is there she raised three more children. She was preceeded in death by her first Daughter Dolores and both husbands, her father, mother, and many friends too. In spite of so much loss in her life, she continued to live each day with excitment and wonder. She had numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren and tried to coorespond with them throughout the years. Her only sister Ruth Burke (Hagerman) died within a month of Dorothy. IT was as if Dorothy was unwilling to leave her sister, who was suffering with dementia, behind in this world.
